ONLINE Painting with Paper Collage: An Exploration of Composition Within the Art of Collage (Oct session)

$54.58 $78.6
ONLINE WORKSHOP October 13-15 10:00 am-4:00 pm EST Instructor:  Anna Carll Join us from anywhere!  Explore a new way to look at and build the art of collage to use color, shape, pattern, and composition as a means to construct an image that is out of the ordinary mindset of this time-honored medium. We will explore the basics of composition through the Architecture of Space principles focusing on foundation shapes that anchor the composition to the spatial plane.  This is a 3-day, adults-only class, and participants will need to be familiar with wet media: acrylic gel or matte medium will be the “glue” used for the construction of the collages. Day 1: The morning will start with a short introduction & art talk/slideshow by the instructor, and a talk on the importance of foundation shapes within composition. That afternoon will start with a short demo based on foundation shapes (mentioned before) that will help you decide on your basic composition for the remainder of the workshop—then we will begin building the background elements of our collages and paint/sand the entire background. NOTE: There will be a short video of the materials you will need for the speed collage exercise and the foundation shape explorations made available to you before the workshop. Day 2: Will start with a short demo, and participants will continue to build their main collage and focus more on a single heroic area/focal point of the composition, building density with a lot of detail. Day 3: We will bring the collage together by editing the image using house paint with an eye towards making new compositional connections—there will be another short demonstration by the instructor. The class will end early to allow for a critique of work produced via Zoom. This class will offer participants an abstracted view of realism or total abstraction if that is preferred—you’ll get to choose which way you want to go. Attention will be paid to building composition and detail within the image. This is an online workshop that is set up like an in-person one where Anna is present in her studio for 3 days in a row from 10 am to 4 pm EST.  There will be a 40-minute lunch break each day. The main differences are: zoom engagement and google drive platform for individual monitoring. A dual webcam setup—one camera that is vertical or upright for speaking to you as a group via zoom, and an overhead camera for several demonstrations that will occur during the workshop. A collaborative folder will be setup on google drive that will correspond with the flow of the workshop where you’ll be able to upload/post your evolving collage and ask any questions—Anna be monitoring this throughout the workshop. The workshop will be recorded and available for one month after the workshop.   IT WOULD BE BEST IF YOU CAN BE PRESENT DURING THOSE THREE DAYS. You’ll need to be familiar with both Zoom and Google Drive platforms. Townsend Atelier staff will be available to facilitate and assist with any technical issues or questions as needed. Raised in Sarasota, FL, Carll’s early influences were imprinted in a tropical and urban setting. In 1984, Carll received her BA from the University of Florida, after which she relocated to Atlanta, GA, where she lived and worked for 16 years. In 1995, Carll embraced and pursued a fine art discipline and spent 12 years honing her craft in the North Georgia Mountains under the influence of the beautiful Appalachians in the Blue Ridge area. Carll now makes her home in Chattanooga, TN. Carll began her career as an illustrator and graphic designer, with a strong background in art history. During her career as a designer in Atlanta, Carll maintained long-term relationships with Coca-Cola, Georgia Pacific, Canada Life Insurance, Southwire, and a long list of law firms. In between large design projects in 1992, Carll began private study with the late painter Ouida Canaday who founded the Atlanta Piedmont Arts Festival, and continued study with Canaday until 1994. In 1999, Carll quit the graphic design industry to become a full-time painter. From that point onward she evolved as a self-taught artist. Carll’s main influences are Picasso, Matisse, Richard Diebenkorn & Mark Bradford. Carll began her painting career with very colorful figurative work which slowly evolved into non-representational abstract work that is based on the concept of urban expansion & erosion. Carll’s first gallery representation began in 1997 with Bender Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta and is now represented by six galleries in the United States. Carll’s work is collected by a diverse group of private collectors and corporations in the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia.
