Stitched Abstraction—Explore the Art of Re-creation with Paper & Thread

$67.5 $104.63
November 2-6 10:00 am-4:00 pm EST @ Townsend Atelier Instructor:  Anna Carll This workshop is designed for participants who have taken workshops with Carll previously, but it is NOT NECESSARY for those who want a challenge. This class will go deeper into collage exploration. Using watercolor paper, acrylic paint, collage material, and waxed linen thread, participants will create several abstracted pieces that will be cut up and/or rearranged into a new piece with an unusual composition. Particular attention will be placed on creating exquisite components and various stitching methods to take the work into new directions and levels. Discussions & examples about armature and hanging methods for presentation will round out the week. This class will offer returning attendees an abstracted view of collage with paper and broaden their approach to letting an image go to create something new. This is where participants can up their game and dive deeper into all levels of the collage process. Participants are welcome to use fabric for some of the components as well. Attention will be paid to building the image organically and simplifying the stitching process. This is a 5-day, adults-only class, and attendees will need to be familiar with wet media—acrylic paint, mediums, inks, and collage. A knowledge of sewing or stitching will be very helpful, but not necessary. What you will learn on a deeper level: – Detailed learning of composition – More advanced techniques of collage – Expand your art practice to include various stitching techniques – Create work that stands out from standard approaches CLICK HERE for a detailed daily schedule CLICK HERE for materials list About the Instructor: Anna Carll was born in 1960, the youngest child of a large German-American family with five other siblings. Raised in Sarasota, FL, Carll’s early influences were imprinted in a tropical and urban setting. In 1984, Carll received her BA from the University of Florida, after which she relocated to Atlanta, GA, where she lived and worked for 16 years. In 1995, Carll embraced and pursued a fine art discipline and spent 12 years honing her craft in the North Georgia Mountains under the influence of the beautiful Appalachians in the Blue Ridge area. Carll now makes her home in Chattanooga, TN. Carll began her career as an illustrator and graphic designer, with a strong background in art history. During her career as a designer in Atlanta, Carll maintained long-term relationships with Coca-Cola, Georgia Pacific, Canada Life Insurance, Southwire, and a long list of law firms. In between large design projects in 1992, Carll began private study with the late painter Ouida Canaday who founded the Atlanta Piedmont Arts Festival, and continued study with Canaday until 1994. In 1999, Carll quit the graphic design industry to become a full-time painter. From that point onward she evolved as a self-taught artist. Carll’s main influences are Picasso, Matisse, Richard Diebenkorn & Mark Bradford. Carll began her painting career with very colorful figurative work which slowly evolved into non-representational abstract work that is based on the concept of urban expansion & erosion. Carll’s first gallery representation began in 1997 with Bender Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta and is now represented by six galleries in the United States. Carll’s work is collected by a diverse group of private collectors and corporations in the United States, South America, Europe, and Asia.
